Learn About Tentmaking

A practical, biblical model for cross-cultural mission.

Tentmaking equips believers to use their professions to live and work in places where access to traditional mission work is limited, build real relationships, and serve in ways that can lead to lasting spiritual impact.

You don't have to leave your profession behind. You can use it as part of your calling.

Definition

What Is Tentmaking?

Tentmaking is not a program or a job title. It is a way of living missionally through ordinary professional life.

A tentmaker works in a real professional role, earns a living through that work, builds natural relationships, and looks for faithful opportunities to share Christ in culturally appropriate ways.

Clarification

What Tentmaking Is — and Is Not

Not every believer working overseas is functioning as a tentmaker. A person may live cross-culturally, work in a professional role, or even live among an unreached people group without intentionally engaging in mission. That work may be valuable, but tentmaking involves more than location or employment.

In the missional sense, a tentmaker is a believer who intentionally uses ordinary professional life as a platform for faithful presence, meaningful relationships, and wise opportunities to share Christ.

Tentmaking is not pretending to have a profession in order to do ministry. It is also not simply having a job overseas. It is real work, real presence, real relationships, and intentional witness.

Scripture

Tentmaking in the Bible

The term "tentmaking" comes from Acts 18, where Paul worked with Aquila and Priscilla, who shared the same trade. While supporting himself through ordinary work, Paul also continued his ministry and witness.

This example helps show that professional work and gospel mission do not have to be separated. In Scripture, ordinary work can become a setting for faithful presence, relationship-building, and wise opportunities to share Christ.

Key Scriptures: Acts 18:1–3, Acts 20:33–35, 1 Thessalonians 2:9

"Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations…"
Matthew 28:18–20
"All believers in Christ to the end of time are included in His commission… All who take upon themselves the sacred vows of the church are thereby pledged to be co-workers with Christ."
Ellen G. White, The Desire of Ages, p. 822

How It Works

A simple, ordinary pattern.

01

Work

Use your professional skills in a real role.

02

Live

Become part of a local community and culture.

03

Build Relationships

Develop trust through everyday life and meaningful work.

04

Share Faith Naturally

Look for open doors to witness with wisdom, humility, and respect.

Why It Matters

Where profession opens doors.

Many places with limited access are not easily reached through traditional ministry structures. Professional work can create a natural and credible presence in these settings.

Tentmaking allows believers to serve, work, and build relationships in places where their profession may open doors that other paths cannot.
